- a new level in luxury escapes to the country
A Place To Recoup, Restore And Revive.
The Woodsman's Treehouse is a totally private and unique experience set high up in the branches of a veteran oak. The ultimate retreat. A stylish combination of sustainable craftsmanship and luxurious interiors with a playful touch; highlights include your own sauna and hot tub on the upper deck, a revolving woodburner, an open air tree-shower and a stainless steel slide.
Opened in the summer of 2016, this is a magical setting that can only be described as 'Utopia', with uninterrupted vistas through the tree canopy across an enchanted Dorset woodland.
The Woodsman's Treehouse's grand pier-like boardwalk extends into your own private kingdom: a king-sized bed, a double-ended copper bath and the rotating fireplace that can be pointed toward the bed, sofa or kitchen. A particularly notable feature is a window in the floor, looking down to the stream below. The thick insulating walls feature picture windows that offer woodland views, and there is ceiling window above the bed that looks up at the impressive oak canopy above. We have not overlooked any of the practicalities either; the treehouse has a proper indoor flushing loo and an entrance lobby for coats and muddy boots.
In The Trees, In Luxury
Outside on the huge rear deck there is a wood fired pizza oven and barbeque, as well as one of our now famous outdoor tree showers - supplied with endless piping hot water. It's ideal in the rain or snow as well as on any other day.
From this level there is a spiral staircase up to the roof/spa deck, where you'll find a hot tub and a sauna in complete privacy. It's rather special to be relaxing up amongst the branches, looking through the woods towards the sunset.
As well as all the outdoor pleasures, the Treehouse's kitchen makes it fully self-contained. It really is a luxury getaway all year round.
An Evolved Design
As we saw opportunities during the building process, so the design evolved. For example, the original plan for a ground level spiral staircase has been replaced by a stainless steel one-metre-wide slide. The front door is now made from scorched oak with a vintage bronze porthole window, along with a bronze steam engine's steering wheel which acts as a door handle. The effect is something akin to entering via a submarine's airlock door and once inside you are in your own private world.
The Woodsman's Treehouse is built on long stilts high up amongst the branches of three oak trees. It is in excess of 30ft high on the roof deck. It is a substantial structure that has been carefully designed to not stress the trees in any way. With that in mind, we don't touch the trees at all, allowing rain water to run down the stems and wildlife to travel up and down in the normal way, hence maintaining the delicate ecosystem of the oak tree. We don't stress the trees by imposing a heavy loads on them or by fixing bolts into them. We believe that the tree has grown in response to its environment and as such should be left well alone.
The Woodman's Treehouse is all about being amongst the trees and up in the branches, enjoying and admiring them while not damaging them in any way. It incorporates a great deal of wood craftsmanship throughout, along with a variety of additional materials that are either found or made in the woods.
A design statement written by Keith Brownlie, the architect who we designed The Woodman's Treehouse with, offers a more full background to the thinking behind it.The Woodman's Treehouse Design
